Reason for Baptism
WHY BAPTISM?
Why is Baptism important?
1. It is the first step of obedience
When Jesus began his public ministry he was “baptized” by John-the-Baptist. John said he could not baptize Jesus, but he needed to be baptized by Jesus. (Matthew 3:13-17) Jesus insisted that John baptize him by saying; “Permit it to be so now, for this it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness”. Jesus, through this public act, revealed to the world he was following in obedience the will of His Father.
2. It spiritually identifies you with Jesus Christ
Believer’s Baptism is your opportunity to declare to the world that you have become a follower of Christ and you are identifying yourself with His Church. Romans 6:4
3. It unites you with “the church” and Ebenezer Baptist
In order to better understand how this happens we see Scripture directs us that Baptism is the entrance into a local true church. What is a “true” church? A “true” church is defined as; “Believers gathered together, presenting the Gospel, and administering the ordinances.” The long definition of the purpose of Baptism is: Valid baptism, the door to the local church, is performed by an appropriately selected administrator of a true church who immerses a believer in water for the purpose of profession of faith with and in the name of Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity, symbolizing the subject’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
